DK Aruna addressing the press

In a major relief to BJP national vice-president DK Aruna, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday, 4 September, asked the state government to publish the Telangana High Court’s order declaring her as the returned candidate (MLA) for the Gadwal Assembly constituency with effect from 12 December 2018, in the Gazette Notification.

The court has also declared the election of sitting MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy as void. It gave this order while responding to a petition filed by Aruna against Reddy.

In a letter to the chief secretary and secretary of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, ECI Secretary Sanjay Kumar urged to publish the order in the next issue of the Telangana State Gazette Notification.

He said the receipt of this letter along with its enclosures may kindly be acknowledged. Fifty-six pages of the court order copy were also enclosed.

Complaint to ECI about the delay

Three days ago, on 1 September, Telangana BJP complained to the ECI against the state government for failing to administer the oath to Aruna even after the High Court passed an order a few days ago declaring her as MLA from Gadwal Assembly constituency.

The court declared that the election of sitting MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy was void.

A delegation led by DK Aruna, former MLC N Ramachander Rao and others met the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj and submitted the court copy.

Earlier, in a letter addressed to the State Legislative Assembly secretary, she requested to administer the oath to her as a member of the Legislative Assembly and comply with the judgment issued by the High Court.

But it did not happen, prompting her to lodge a complaint with the CEO.

The election and its result

Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy won the 2018 Assembly elections by polling 1,00,057 votes, defeating Aruna, who contested on the Congress ticket at the time and secured 71,612 votes.

Even as Aruna’s petition was being heard in the high court, Aruna left the Congress and joined the BJP.

The court also ordered Krishna Mohan Reddy to pay a penalty of ₹3 lakh.

Aruna served as minister for information and public relations in Andhra Pradesh in the Cabinet led by late YS Rajasekhara Reddy between 2004 and 2009.

She also served as the minister for small-scale industries, sugar, khadi, and village industries in K Rosaiah’s Cabinet between 2009 and 2010.

She represented Gadwal in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly between 2004–2014 and in Telangana Legislative Assembly between 2014 and 2018.
