Synopsis: Hyderabad advocate Khaja Moizuddin was killed in a suspected targeted hit-and-run at Masab Tank, prompting police to form five special teams to trace the accused. Investigators suspect a conspiracy linked to Waqf property disputes. Political leaders, including Asaduddin Owaisi, demanded a murder probe, organised crime charges, and security for the victim’s family as tensions over law and order rise.

The Hyderabad police have constituted five special teams to trace the accused involved in the killing of advocate Khaja Moizuddin (63), also known as Moinuddin, who succumbed to injuries after being run over by an SUV in a suspected targeted hit-and-run attack at Masab Tank on Saturday.

Investigators suspect that the assailants conducted a recce for nearly three days before carrying out the attack. Police said four persons were travelling in the SUV involved in the incident.

Police said they were also probing allegations of a larger conspiracy linked to disputes over Waqf properties and were examining FIRs related to the matter registered at Malakpet police station as part of the investigation.

Claiming that his father had been fighting for decades against alleged encroachments and privatisation attempts involving Anwar-ul-Uloom Waqf properties at Malakpet and Mallepally, as well as Madarsa-e-Aizza in Malakpet, victim’s son, Farhan, alleged that Mujahid Alam Khan and Mahabub Alam Khan were behind the attack.

Threats that followed before death

Farhan alleged that his father had earlier faced threats and pressure to withdraw from the cases. He claimed that a similar attempt had been made on his father during morning prayers three years ago and that the family had also received threats over the past few years. “This is the sixth such attack,” he said.

The incident triggered sharp political reactions and renewed concerns over law and order in Hyderabad. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi termed the incident a “cowardly attack” and demanded that it be treated as a case of murder. He alleged that the killing was part of a larger conspiracy aimed at stopping Moizuddin’s work relating to Waqf property protection.

Owaisi urged Telangana government to arrest not only those directly involved in the attack but also the alleged conspirators behind it. He also sought invocation of organised crime provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and called for the constitution of a special court for speedy trial of the case. He demanded security for the victim’s family and an impartial investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Secunderabad, Rakshita Krishna Murthy said that a case had been registered under Section 103(1) of BNS based on the complaint filed by the victim’s son.

“The complaint refers to previous attacks and threats. We are verifying those claims and pursuing available leads regarding the assailants,” the officer said.

The Telangana High Court Advocates’ Association condemned the killing and urged the Director General of Police and the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner to ensure a thorough investigation and speedy arrest of those responsible.
