78 students hospitalised due to food poisoning

As many as 78 female students of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) Residential School at Bheemgal in Nizamabad district were hospitalised after they fell ill post-dinner on Monday, 11 September.

The students were first taken to the nearest primary health centre (PHC) after complaints of vomiting, stomachache, and diarrhoea around 1 am.

A case of food poisoning?

“Of the 105 students who became ill, 27 students were treated at the PHC, while 78 others were shifted to the Government General Hospital in Nizamabad for better treatment as they displayed acute symptoms,” District Medical and Health Officer Dr Sudarshan told South First.

All the students are out of danger and will be discharged soon, he added.

“It might be food poisoning, as the kitchen was not clean,” Dr Sudarshan said, “We have to take samples of food and water. After testing them, we will know the exact cause.”

Speaking to South First, Vanitha, the District Gender and Equity Officer, said that the students had eaten brinjal tomato curry and dal for dinner, and moong dal for snacks. “Appropriate action will be taken once we know the cause of the sickness,” she added.

The students are from classes 7 to 10, besides a few intermediate students.
