Synopsis: Three new Telangana ministers were allocated portfolios on Wednesday, days after the first Cabinet expansion under Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The inclusion of G Vivek Venkata Swamy, Vakiti Srihari, and Adluri Laxman Kumar, all first-time MLAs, brings the Cabinet’s strength to 12, though three berths remain vacant.
Days after the first Cabinet expansion under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the Telangana government on Wednesday, 11 June officially allocated portfolios to the three newly inducted ministers.
G Vivek Venkata Swamy has been assigned the Labour, Mining and Sports portfolios.
Vakiti Srihari will oversee Animal Husbandry and Commercial Taxes.
Adluri Laxman Kumar has been given charge of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Welfare and Minority Affairs.
The three ministers were sworn in on 8 June in a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad, in the presence of Governor Vishnu Dev Varma and senior Congress leaders.
Though their inclusion brings the Cabinet’s strength to 12, three more ministerial berths remain vacant.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy continues to hold major portfolios including home, education, urban development and municipal administration.
In a related development, Congress MLA Ramchander Naik from Dornakal has been appointed Deputy Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
The much-anticipated Cabinet expansion is widely being seen as a rebuff to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, with the party’s central leadership reportedly going ahead with the expansion without accommodating his preferences.
For several months, Revanth Reddy had strongly advocated the inclusion of Bodhan MLA P Sudarshan Reddy in the Cabinet and was reportedly keen on allocating him the home portfolio.
However, when the official list arrived in Hyderabad on Sunday morning with the names of G Vivek Venkata Swamy, Laxman Kumar and Vakiti Srihari, Sudarshan Reddy’s name was notably absent – an omission that left the Chief Minister red faced.
Sources within the party suggest that the Congress high command had previously indicated the delay in Cabinet expansion was not due to internal indecision, but rather Revanth Reddy’s insistence on bringing Sudarshan Reddy on board.
Party insiders also pointed to opposition from Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President B Mahesh Kumar Goud to Sudarshan Reddy’s candidature, which further complicated matters for the Chief Minister.
Interestingly, all three ministers inducted on 8 June are first-time MLAs.
G Vivek Venkata Swamy, who earlier served as a Member of Parliament between 2009 and 2014, is in the Assembly for the first time.
Vakiti Srihari and Adluri Laxman Kumar are also first-time legislators.
