Telangana shocker: In 2nd suicide case at Nizamabad Medical College, student ends life in hostel

Just a little more than a month after a third-year MBBS student at Nizamabad Medical College died by suicide, a second-year student at the institution took his own life.

The 22-year-old Sanath Kumar was found unresponsive in his hostel room on the morning of Friday, 31 March.

He was from Pedapalli, where his father is employed in Singareni Collieries (SCCL).

On 25 February, a third-year MMBS student was found dead in his hostel room under similar circumstances.

What the police know

Sanath Kumar’s roommate went to another hostel room to study on Thursday. When returned on Friday morning, knocked on the door but there was no response from inside.

He and a few other students forced the door open and found Sanath’s body.

Nizamabad Town-1 Police Circle Inspector (CI) Vijaybabu Dhanavat told South First that the exact reason for Sanath ending his life was not known.

However, he apparently sent a text message at 3 am to his parents and brother informing them that he was “dying by suicide” and also apologising for the act, the police found during the preliminary investigation.

The cops were recording the statements of his friends and roommates, among others, to ascertain the exact reason behind Sanath taking the extreme step, the official said.

“Both his teachers and friends said that he did not have any issues related to studies. His family said he was not facing any personal issues on that front either,” said the CI.

“One of the practical exams was scheduled today, and everyone from his batch was preparing for it,” NMC Telangana Junior Doctor Association member Avinash told South First on Friday.

“He performed well in the recently-concluded examinations. But, the messages he sent to family members said he had decided earlier to end his life. He has also asked his brother, who resides abroad, to return home and take care of the parents,” added Avinash.

In February, 23-year-old Dasari Harsha died by suicide under similar conditions at NMC.

He studied along with his friends till 9.30 pm, before they decided to study individually in their rooms.

The next morning, his friends forced open the door when Harsha did not respond to their calls to join them for breakfast and found him unresponsive.
