On Friday, 5 January, the Karimnagar Rural Police arrested the stalker who assaulted a 26-year-old woman with a knife after she reportedly spurned his love and marriage proposal in Kothapalli village. The incident unfolded on the evening of Thursday, 4 January.

According to the police, the accused is M Sai, residing opposite the victim Kavya’s house, had persistently — over the past three to four years — harassed her to reciprocate his love and recently escalated to proposing marriage.

On the day of the attack, realising that no one was at home with Kavya, Sai barged in and once again pressed her to accept his marriage proposal. When he was met with rejection yet again, Sai, armed with a knife, attacked the woman.

As she screamed, villagers rushed to her house, causing the accused to flee.

Details of the case

Karunakar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Karimnagar Rural, told South First, “The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm in Kothapalli village on Thursday. The woman was being harassed for three to four years by M Sai, who is a resident of the same village and stays opposite the woman’s house. The woman rejected his love and recently, he started harassing her for marriage, which was also rejected.”

The ACP added, “Previously, the family members of the woman requested a meeting in the Panchayat and asked for a solution to the harassment their daughter had been facing. The villagers and the parents of the accused told him not to harass the woman, but he continued to harass her.”

On Thursday, finding the woman alone at home, he entered, once again proposing marriage. Upon her refusal, he viciously attacked her with a knife, slashing both sides of her neck. When she tried to fend him off, one of her hands suffered superficial cuts. Her screams attracted villagers, prompting the accused to flee.

The villagers took the woman to a nearby private hospital and she is reportedly out of danger. There are deep cuts on one side of her neck but she is being treated and is out of danger, the police stated.

The police apprehended the accused on Friday, charging him under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 448 (punishment for house trespass), and 354(D) (stalking). “We will produce him before the court and take necessary action,” the police stated.

The victim, Kavya, holds an MSc degree and is currently unemployed. The accused works as a supervisor in a sand quarry located in the Manthani area of Karimnagar.
