Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday, 19 May, said he felt that though the Congress won the Assembly elections in Karnataka, nothing better would come for the people of the state.

Addressing the BRS workers’ training camp in Nanded of Maharashtra, the chief minister said the BJP lost the election to the Congress in Karnataka because of its divisive policies.

“At the end of the day, there is one party which lost the election and another which won it. Do you think anything better is going to happen there?” he asked.

KCR also said that in any election, it should not be parties but the people who win the polls.

‘Telangana model is needed’

He said Telangana has however shown how people or for that matter farmers could win an election.

“We have done so much for farmers that farmers won in Telangana. The Telangana model of development is needed for the entire country. In fact, people in all the states are yearning for the kind of development witnessed in Telangana,” said the BRS supremo.

The chief minister said that the BRS was born out of the need to improve the living standards of farmers by giving a direction and fillip to the agriculture sector.

The movement that the BRS was leading would not stop until it achieved its goal, he said.

He also told the party workers that they should be prepared for a long-drawn-out struggle.

“I do not want quitters. If there are any, please do not join the BRS,” he said.

KCR also pointed out that the malady that afflicted India was that it could not progress because of the skewed policies of successive governments at the Centre.

“Take for instance China and how it became a superpower. Or for that matter the tigers of East Asia like Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. They moved on the road to progress and development with a vision. But India is where it was about 75 years ago. This is a cause for concern,” the Telangana chief minister said.

‘Focusing on Maharashtra’

The chief minister said that he was now focusing on Maharashtra as it shared a very long border with Telangana.

Though Telangana was progressing on the road to prosperity, Maharashtra lagged behind despite the Krishna and Godavari rivers originating in the state, he said.

There is no reason why Maharashtra should remain a laggard in development, he said, and contrasted the situation of Maharashtra farmers with those in Telangana where, he said, they led a life of dignity because the government cared for them.

“Telangana is now at the top when it comes to the production of food grains, and the state government is providing crop investment subsidies to the farmers to help them improve productivity,” said KCR.

He said it was unfortunate that though the country receives rainfall of 1.4 lakh tmcft, only 20,000 tmcft of water was being utilised for growing crops and for drinking purposes.

The Congress which had ruled the country for decades could not do anything to harness the water, he said.

“There has to be a qualitative change in the way the country is governed and policies are made,” he said and wondered why there should not be more major irrigation projects to make the best use of water that is flowing into the sea waste.

“Do the farmers have to struggle and fight forever for what is due to them?” he asked.
