Synopsis: A woman IPS trainee at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Telangana has accused a fellow trainee officer of sexual harassment, assault, criminal intimidation and blackmail. The Attapur PS have registered an FIR based on the survivor’s complaint under various sections of the BNS and the IT Act. Officer Uday Krishna Reddy has been accused of sexist remarks, coercion, physical violence, stalking and the non-consensual recording and sharing of a private video.

A woman IPS trainee at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Shivarampally, Hyderabad, Telangana, has accused a fellow trainee officer of sexual harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation and blackmail.

The Attapur police registered an FIR on Saturday, 18 July, against trainee officer Uday Krishna Reddy based on the survivor’s complaint.

Police invoked Sections 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 127(2), 115(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with offences including sexual harassment, assault, criminal intimidation, stalking and outraging the modesty of a woman. Sections 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, relating to violation of privacy and the electronic transmission of sexually explicit material, have also been invoked.

According to the FIR, accessed by South First, the alleged harassment began around 23 June. The complainant alleged that the accused sent her sexually abusive messages on WhatsApp and made sexist remarks about her in the presence of other IPS trainees.

The survivor further alleged that the accused repeatedly made baseless claims that she was in a relationship with another trainee officer and pressured her to admit to it while using derogatory language against her.

Alleged assault and blackmail

The complaint states that the accused also coerced her into unlocking her mobile phone and showing him her personal messages. On 8 July, he allegedly took her phone to his room and forced her to reveal its password.

According to the FIR, the alleged abuse escalated on the night of 9 July, when the accused confined the complainant to his room, grabbed her by the hair and attempted to strangle her.

He allegedly held a knife to her neck, prevented her from leaving the room and threw packets of condoms at her. The complainant further alleged that he assaulted her again on the morning of Thursday, 10 July.

The FIR also alleges that the accused groped the complainant and attempted to touch her inappropriately. It further states that he secretly recorded a private video of her without her knowledge and sent it to her husband in an alleged attempt to blackmail her.

In her complaint, the survivor also alleged that the accused circulated false information about her within the Academy with the intention of damaging her reputation.
