'Love-marriage' to strained relationship Man beheads wife in Hyderabad apartment over suspicion of loyalty

A 45-year-old woman undergoing a beautician course was allegedly murdered by her third husband — 10 years her junior — at Abdullapurmet in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 16 January.

The police said the man suspected the fidelity of his wife for 15 years, which made him sever her head with a sharp object.

Identifying the accused as an auto-rickshaw driver named Vijaya Kumar, the police said he married Pushapavathi aka Vijaya Lakshmi in 2009 after a brief courtship. The intercaste couple has two children.

Murdered in sister’s house

The couple, along with their children, had been living in a two-bedroom house at the JNNURM Colony for the past two months.

Around 10 am on Tuesday, Vijay took Pushpavathi to his sister’s newly-allotted 2BHK house nearby under the pretext of cleaning it.

However, he attacked her with a knife and severed her head, said the police. Hearing Pushpavathi’s screams, the neighbours rushed to the scene and saw Vijay splashed with blood.

“We tried to catch him but he fled. Then we rushed into the house and found the body lying in a pool of blood in one of the rooms. Her head was separated from the body.” complainant Kikkara Gopi Shankar, a resident of the same locality, told South First.

He added that he and other neighbours informed the police immediately after finding the woman’s body.

The police subsequently arrested Vijay and seized what is being considered the murder weapon. They also sent Pushpavathi’s body for a post-mortem examination.

“It was Pushpavati’s third and Vijay’s first marriage. He used to suspect her fidelity and often quarrelled with her,” said complainant Shankar.

Based on his complaint, a case was registered under IPC Sections 498(A) (when a husband or relative subjects a woman to cruelty) and 302 (murder), as well as under Section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Shankar claimed that the couple’s eight-year-old daughter testified that her father used to subject her mother to cruelty.

Earlier complaints

Meanwhile, Pushapavathi’s father Gaddam Jangaiah said Vijay used to harass his daughter regularly.

He added that she had lodged an attempted-murder complaint against him with the Medipally police under the Rachakonda Commissionerate.

“She had also filed cases of assault and harassment at the Malkajgiri Police Station and another police station in  Secunderabad,” Shankar said, claiming that the couple had had a love marriage.

While Vijay belongs to the Munnuru Kapu community, a Backward Caste, the deceased Pushpavathi was a Madiga, a Scheduled Caste.
