Synopsis: Several students of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) were detained by Osmania University police in Secunderabad on Wednesday, ahead of an on-campus event featuring Telangana RSS Prant Pracharak Lingam Sridhar. Students had opposed the event and called for a boycott. Several student organisations alleged that the police acted at the behest of the EFLU administration, gave no reason for the detentions and demanded the students’ immediate release.
Several students of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) were detained by Osmania University police, Secunderabad, Telangana on Wednesday, 30 September, ahead of an on-campus event featuring Telangana Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Prant Pracharak Lingam Sridhar.
The event, titled “Yuva Sankalp – Empowering Youth for Nation Building,” was organised by the Bhagat Singh Youth Club.
The student organisations alleged that Osmania University police detained the students at the behest of the EFLU administration and did not give them a reason for the action.
They said the detentions are illegal and arbitrary and demanded the students’ immediate release.
Those detained included EFLU Students’ Union president Harshad Shibin of the Fraternity Movement, general secretary Irfan Shajudheen and joint secretary Haleemathu Sa’adiya of the MSF, and sports secretary Udita of the NSUI. Councillors Suaadha Sudheer (Fraternity) and Ashmit (NSUI), Fraternity Movement unit leaders Noura Hanan, Maryam Nasiha, Yasir and Rasal, and Sreeja of the Disha Students’ Organisation were also among those detained.

Disha Students’ Organisation, EFLU said students routinely faced difficulties in obtaining permission for their own programmes, the administration’s approval of the RSS event sent a message about the kind of politics it permitted on campus.
The organisation also said the event poster described Sridhar as a “social worker” without mentioning his RSS affiliation.
