Saroornagar Police have registered a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Akula Srivani for allegedly stoking communal tensions and intimidating a Muslim schoolteacher following a heated exchange at a private school.
The incident took place on September 29 in Hyderabad’s Saroornagar.
Srivani, accompanied by a group of supporters, reached Sagarika Integrated High School in Sri Venkateshwara Colony and confronted the principal and a teacher. Srivani alleged that the teacher had instructed students to remove religious and cultural markers such as bindis, tilaks, scarves and rakhis.
When the teacher clarified that the students had been wearing scarves beyond the permitted period, Srivani referred to the teacher’s Muslim faith and said, “But you wear your hijab throughout the year? Who gave permission for that? It is your habit. In the same way, it is our children’s habit to wear scarves and tilaks.”
When another teacher intervened and explained that students had been asked to dispose of rakhi threads because they had become soiled, Srivani said the threads were sacred symbols of protection from sisters and that boys should be allowed to keep them for as long as they wanted.
A video of the confrontation has since gone viral on social media. Srivani and her supporters can be seen confronting the school staff, even as they denied the allegations and apologised.

The corporator has also alleged that classroom lessons included criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the GDP, and questioned why such topics were included in the curriculum.
Saroornagar SHO N. Srishylam confirmed to South First that a case had been registered against Srivani. Further details are awaited.
