Former Andhra Pradesh Congress president and senior politician D Srinivas and his elder son D Sanjay rejoined the party in the presence of its Telangana in-charge Manikrao Thakre, Telangana president A Revanth Reddy and other leaders at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Sunday, 26 March.

Srinivas, who is popularly known as DS in political circles, came to Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad in a wheelchair after many years.

Thakre and Revanth Reddy welcomed Srinivas into the party by felicitating him with a shawl.

Srinivas’ younger son Arvind Dharmapuri is in the BJP, and was elected as an MP from the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 general elections.

Joined BRS

Sanjay earlier joined the BRS along with his father, who was elected as a Rajya Sabha member, but he maintained a distance from the party due to some differences with it.

Srinivas’ tenure as MP ended in June last year. He had been trying to rejoin Congress for several months, but it was postponed due to health reasons.

A few days ago, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) gave clearance to Sanjay, a former Nizamabad mayor, to rejoin the party.

He is looking to obtain a party ticket to contest from the Nizamabad Urban Assembly constituency.

However, Telangana Congress working president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, who is also aspiring for a party ticket from the Nizamabad Urban Assembly constituency, told his supporters that the party leadership did not give any assurance to Sanjay that he would contest the elections.

Interacting with leaders after rejoining the party, Srinivas said it was like returning home after several years, adding that it was the Congress that gave him recognition and made him the state president of the united Andhra Pradesh.
