A festival procession in Hyderabad turned tragic late on Sunday, 17 August, when five people were electrocuted and four others injured during the Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra at Gokul Nagar in Ramanthapur, under the Uppal police station limits.
The incident occurred around midnight during the final leg of the Janmashtami celebrations. According to police, the vehicle carrying the decorated chariot broke down, prompting a group of youths to push it. The chariot came into contact with an overhead high-tension wire, instantly electrocuting several people.
Locals shifted the victims to nearby hospitals. However, five of them were declared dead on arrival. The deceased people were identified as Krishna Yadav (21), a resident of Old Ramanthapur, Srikanth Reddy (35), Suresh Yadav (34), Rudra Vikas (39), and Rajendra Reddy (45). Their bodies were later shifted to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the mishap. Preliminary reports suggest that inadequate precautions near overhead power lines may have led to the tragedy.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed shock over the deaths and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. Prabhakar, who enquired about the condition of the injured, directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care. He also urged greater vigilance near power lines during religious processions, particularly in the monsoon season.
BRS Working President KT Rama Rao called the incident “deeply saddening” and called upon the government to support the victims’ families and take preventive measures to avoid similar accidents.
“It is extremely sad that five people lost their lives due to electric shock in this procession held as part of the Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. It is heartbreaking that Krishna Yadav, Srikanth Reddy, Suresh Yadav, Rudra Vikas, and Rajendra Reddy died in this tragedy. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and appeal to the government to support them. I sincerely wish the speedy recovery of the four people who are seriously injured. Appropriate precautions should be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future,” he said.
