As many as 216.69 kg of narcotics, drugs, and psychotropic substances seized by the Customs and Directorate Revenue Intelligence (DRI) were destroyed in Hyderabad suburbs. The value of the 216.69 kg drugs is ₹468.02 crore, according to Customs Additional Commissioner Dr D Gandhi.
The substances were destroyed through incineration at Hyderabad Waste Management Project in Dundigal, as part of the fight against drugs.
These narcotics, drugs and psychotropic drugs were seized from passengers from Nigeria, Benionoise, Tanzanian, South African and Indian origin, and arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad, Hyderabad by the Customs and DRI officials in separate cases.
Of the total seized 216.69 kgs of drugs, heroin comprises 27.911 kgs worth ₹195.37 crore, while mephedrone consists of 136.28 kgs costing ₹ 272.55 crore, and ganja comprises 52.5 kgs worth ₹0.1 crore.
Apart from drugs, a total of 40 lakh smuggled cigarette sticks, which were seized at RGIA by the Customs officials from passengers arriving from various countries were also destroyed.
These cigarettes do not carry the statutory health warning mandated by the Central government and are harmful.
Gandhi said that Hyderabad Customs has always been at the forefront in protecting the economic boundaries of the country and was committed towards the fight against narcotics, drugs and psychotropic substances and in the prevention of the smuggling of the contraband.
