Hyderabad Police have arrested 23-year-old Sandeep Anand, son of Telugu cinema art director Anand Sai, in connection with a fatal road accident on the ORR-Khajaguda stretch.

According to Raidurgam police, the accident occurred at around 4:15 am on August 31, when Nanda Kishor Kumar Ray (31) was crossing the road opposite Ankura Hospital in Khajaguda. He was hit by an Innova Crysta coming from the Nanakramguda ORR Rotary.

The Innova’s driver, 21-year-old Zaid Shah Qadri, stopped and, along with another passer-by, tried to carry the injured man to a hospital.

While the three of them were crossing the road, two vehicles speeding in from Khajaguda towards the Nanakramguda ORR Rotary allegedly struck Nanda Kishor Kumar Ray, Qadri and the man helping them, before fleeing.

Nanda Kishor Kumar Ray died on the spot, while Qadri suffered a leg fracture and other injuries and was admitted to CARE Hospitals in Gachibowli. Ray, who was from Bihar, was working as a helper at Shah Ghouse hotel in Raidurgam.

Investigators traced one of the vehicles involved, a Mahindra XUV electric car, to Sandeep, who was arrested on Tuesday, September 1. His car was also seized.

He has been booked under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a bailable provision that deals with causing death by negligence. Sections 125(a) and 281 of the BNS were also invoked, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The Union Home Ministry had put on hold the more stringent Section 106(2), a non-bailable provision that applies to hit-and-run cases involving a person who causes death by rash and negligent driving and flees without reporting the incident, after protests over its implementation.

Sandeep’s father, Anand Sai, has close ties to Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and is currently serving on the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam board. Sandeep’s mother, actress Vasuki, was Pawan Kalyan’s co-star in the film Tholi Prema.

Police said the investigation into the sequence of collisions and the role of each vehicle is still underway.

Second recent accident involving high-profile driver

The case comes days after another fatal road accident involving the son of a political leader in Hyderabad.

In that case, Lingamaneni Sanjush, son of Rajya Sabha MP and Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader Lingamaneni Ramesh, had fatally knocked down 26-year-old Bharati Mukhi.

The Madhapur police had also invoked Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with causing death by negligence and is a bailable provision.

But Sanjush was not arrested, with the investigating officer saying the decision was based on the fact that the “alleged offence is punishable with imprisonment of less than seven years” and not on “any extraneous influence”.
