As the Gujarat High Court ruled that Prime Minister’s Office need not produce Narendra Modi’s degree details, as sought by Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, politics took its shape in Telangana as leaders asked for one another’s degree certificates.

After poking fun at Prime Minister Modi — albeit obliquely — on the controversy over his postgraduate degree certificate, Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao kept the pressure on the saffron party by taking a swipe at it on Twitter on Tuesday, 4 April.

The minister’s jibe on Twitter was directed at two MPs in Telangana who he said were facing allegations of possessing fake certificates.

He said, “Looks like we have too many MunnaBhai, MBBS types in BJP [sic].”

KTR continued: “2 BJP MPs from Telangana are also allegedly Fake Certificate holders [sic].”

He claimed that they had “forged certificates” from universities in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

“Isn’t it a criminal offence to lie in your election affidavit on whose basis MP gets elected? Should the LS speaker not ascertain & disqualify if found guilty? [sic]” he asked.

The educational qualification kerfuffle

Only on Friday, KTR made fun of the prime minister over the controversy of Modi’s postgraduate certificate without naming him. In his tweet, he said that he had no problem sharing his certificates personally.

He said, “I have a Master’s Degree in Biotechnology from Pune University. Also have a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the City University of New York. Can share both certificates publicly,” he said.

KTR’s comments came in the wake of the Gujarat High Court’s verdict that there was no need for the prime minister’s office to provide Modi’s postgraduate degree.

The prime minister’s postgraduate degree issue has become a hotly-debated subject after the Gujarat High Court verdict set aside, on 31 March, Chief Information Commissioner’s (CIC) direction to PIOs seven years ago to furnish information on Modi’s certificates.

Rubbing salt into the proverbial wounds, the court fined Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ₹25,000 for seeking the certificates.

Kejriwal wrote to the CIC in 2016, seeking details about the educational qualifications of the prime minister. The then-CIC, M Sridhar Acharyulu, issued directions to Gujarat and Delhi universities to furnish the details to Kejriwal.

Gujarat University moved the Gujarat High Court, which had stayed the orders of the CIC.

Bandi Sanjay challenges KCR

Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar, on Tuesday, 4 April, challenged Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to disclose his postgraduate degree certificates, before talking about the educational qualifications of Prime Minister Modi.

“Chandrashekar Rao has claimed to have completed his MSc in Political Science. Let him disclose his certificates, if he has guts, instead of making a hue and cry over the educational qualifications of the Prime Minister,” Sanjay said, while talking to reporters after inspecting the arrangements for Modi’s public meeting scheduled to be held on 8 April.

“What has Chandrashekar Rao studied? He claimed to have studied MSc (Political Science). Let him disclose his certificate. He has done masters’ degree in making fake passports and creating fake certificates,” he alleged.

Recalling the BRS president’s claim that he had studied 80,000 books, Bandi Sanjay said that the knowledge earned from those books was being used in running drug, gambling, and liquor mafias, besides taking huge kickbacks in the name of commissions. “Chandrashekar Rao and his family members are educated fools,” he said.

Contending that KCR had converted a revenue-surplus state into a state ridden with ₹5 lakh crore in debt, Bandi Sanjay said: “BRS has become an acronym for beer, rum, and scotch party. It is a gang of international dacoits, who looted the state through various schemes and scams.”

Reacting to the comments of KCR and his son KTR on Modi’s educational qualifications, Bandi Sanjay said that the prime minister had read the entire Indian society and was leading the country on the path of progress.

Dredging up the TSPSC issue

Bandi Sanjay said that while there have been a series of leaks of question papers, KCR and his family members are parking their ill-gotten money in foreign countries. “His family, which was confined to just a building at Nandi Nagar eight years ago, had amassed huge wealth running into thousands of crores,” he alleged.

The BJP president reiterated his demand for the resignation of KCR and the sacking of KTR from the Cabinet for the TSPSC question paper leak issues and the leak of Class X papers.

“Has Chandrashekar Rao ever reviewed their activities? Even the education minister should also resign,” he said.

Stating that the BJP would continue to fight till the culprits in the TSPSC question paper leak are brought to book, Bandi Sanjay announced that very soon, the party would organise a march of the unemployed at Warangal with thousands of unemployed youth.

“A similar march would be held in all the district headquarters and, later, a massive public meeting would be held in the state capital,” he declared.

Exposing leaders in the past

It should be mentioned that, in 2020, the BRS party alleged that Nizamabad BJP MP Arvind Dharmapuri did not have a graduate degree in MA (Political Science) from Janardhan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (Deemed-to-be University).

This went against the BJP MP’s election affidavit in which Dharmapuri mentioned that he holds a master’s degree in Political Science under distance education mode.

The Directorate of Distance Education of Janardhan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University, in response to BRS Member Krishank Manne’s query, stated, ‘With reference to the above subject, this is to inform you that as per as per the university records, s/o of Dharmapuri Srinivas, Arvind Dharmapuri is not a passed out student in 2018 in Master of Arts, Political Science under distance education mode. He is not enrolled under distance education course in Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (Deemed to Be University).”

Later, the MP clarified that he did not take admission as Dharmapuri Arvind, but just as D Arvind and stated that that was why the university doesn’t have the records.
