Synopsis: BJP State President Ramchander Rao speaking to the media responded to the POCSO case involving Bandi Sanjay’s son, asked, “What connection does Bandi Sanjay have with what his son did? Bandi Sanjay is our party MP and a Union Minister, but the party has nothing to do with this matter.” However, it is to be noted that the survivor’s mother directly accused the Union Minister of State of being physically present at a meeting where “pressure” was brought on them to compromise and drop any plan for a legal remedy.

Telangana government on Monday, 11 May, appointed Deputy Commissioner Police, (Kukatpally), Ritiraj to lead the Special Investigation Team to probe the POCSO case filed against Bandi Bhagirath, son of Union Minister of State Bandi Sanjay.

The development comes after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy amid backlash over not arresting the accused, directed Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand to immediately initiate an investigation into the case, and instructed him to constitute special teams.

According to a press release, the chief minister questioned the DGP over the delay in taking action despite the complaint having been lodged against Bandi Sai Bhagirath at Pet Basheerabad Police Station on 8 May.

The DGP informed the chief minister that the entire police force had been engaged in security arrangements in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hyderabad.

The case

The Pet Basheerabad police in the outskirts of Hyderabad on 8 May, registered an FIR against Bandi Sai Bhagirath (FIR No 684/2026) under Sections 74/75 of BNS and Section 11 read with 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. As is required under the POCSO Act, the Inspector of Pet Basheerabad station filed a report before the IX Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate, Cyberabad, at Medchal.

According to the facts of the case, submitted by Inspector K Vijayavardhan to the court, the complainant (minor girl’s mother) mentioned a sustained pattern of “grooming, emotional manipulation and sexual exploitation” since June, 2025.

The accused, on false promise of marriage and by gaining psychological control of the minor to isolate her, subjected her to repeated physical and sexual abuse at various locations, mostly farmhouses, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The complainant named specific apartments and farmhouses where the alleged exploitation took place.

The Station House officer also submitted to the court the four-page complaint given by the girl’s mother, which has a detailed account of what exactly transpired during the course of the relationship between Bhagirath and the minor girl.

‘What connection does Bandi Sanjay have?’

BJP State President Ramchander Rao speaking to the media responded to the POCSO case involving Bandi Sanjay’s son, asked, “What connection does Bandi Sanjay have with what his son did? Bandi Sanjay is our party MP and a Union Minister, but the party has nothing to do with this matter.”

However, it is to be noted that the survivor’s mother directly accused the Union Minister of State of being physically present at a meeting where “pressure” was brought on them to compromise and drop any plan for a legal remedy.

The statements made at this meeting caused “fear, intimidation and apprehension in our minds,” the mother said.

‘No vendetta’: Ponnam Prabhakar

Meanwhile, Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar took to X, to note that Telangana government is not acting with any vendetta against the son of Bandi Sanjay.

Questioning Bandi Sanjay, he said, “As a Union Minister, you should have been the first to seek a fair and transparent inquiry into the allegations made against your son. Instead of claiming there is a conspiracy against you and trying to gain sympathy, you should cooperate with the investigation. The questions are simple: Did the girl meet you or not? Was your son in contact with the girl or not? These are the facts that must be established. As the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, you should set an example by allowing the law to take its own course.”

He further added, “In such matters, the Telangana government stands firmly with the victim and will ensure that the women and girls of Telangana feel protected and reassured. The Hon’ble Chief Minister has spoken to the DGP and ordered a thorough inquiry. The investigation is being conducted by a woman DCP officer. No matter how powerful they may be, those found guilty cannot escape the law.”

“Bringing BC politics into this issue is neither appropriate nor necessary. If anyone uses power or influence to obstruct the investigation, democracy will not tolerate it,” Ponnam Prabhakar added.
