Synopsis: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed DGP CV Anand to immediately initiate an investigation into the case against the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who has been accused of sexually harassing a 17-year-old girl multiple times. The chief minister instructed the DGP to constitute special teams for a comprehensive investigation into the case, said the state government.

Amid backlash over not arresting the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who has been accused of sexually harassing a 17-year-old girl multiple times, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand to immediately initiate an investigation into the case.

According to a press release, the chief minister questioned the DGP over the delay in taking action despite the complaint having been lodged against Bandi Sai Bhagirath at Pet Basheerabad Police Station on 8 May.

The DGP informed the chief minister that the entire police force had been engaged in security arrangements in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hyderabad.

The chief minister instructed the DGP to constitute special teams for a comprehensive investigation into the case, said the state government.

However, questions have emerged about whether the entire police force in the city was engaged in security arrangements. People pointed out that it was the outrage against the lack of action that prompted the chief minister to issue the order.

Briefs chief minister

According to a press release, DGP Anand briefed the chief minister on the details of the case.

The complaint against Bageerath was that the girl, aged around 17, was made to consume alcohol and then sexually assaulted at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Reportedly, this happened twice. A senior police officer confirmed that an FIR under Section 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 11/12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered on 8 May

The complaint said that Bageerath, aged around 25, had maintained a close relationship with the girl. He allegedly promised to marry her, but later backed out.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports suggested that the police initially were reluctant to register an FIR but did so when the parents of the girl threatened that they would approach the court if they failed to do so.

On 9 May, Bandi Sanjay termed the allegations a “political hit job” aimed at maligning him ahead of the Prime Minister’s programme.

Interestingly, hours before the registration of this FIR at Pet Basheerabad Police Station, Bageerath lodged a complaint with the police in Karimnagar town, his native place. Sanjay represents the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency.

In his complaint to the SHO of Two Town police station in Karimnagar, Bageerath named the minor girl and her parents, accusing them of intimidation and extortion.
