Unidentified youths attacked Bhongir MP Komatireddy Venkata Reddy while he was taking the Telangana government to task over the condition of roads at a programme at Itikalapadu in the Shaligouraram mandal of the Nalgonda district in the state on Thursday, 16 February.

The irate youths who attacked Venkata Reddy were BRS activists, said Congress members,

They allegedly threw chairs and sticks at him when he said he did not understand what the Telangana chief minister did with the loans the state had availed.

Learning about the tense situation at the venue of the meeting, more Congress workers reached the spot and stood around Venkat Reddy like a shield, while others drove the irate youths away.

What apparently annoyed the youths was the remark of Venakta Reddy that it took him hours to travel for just 3 km to reach the village.

He threw a virtual punch at KCR for turning the state into a mountain of debt.

As soon as the news of the attack spread, Congress leaders denounced the violence and wondered whether people were “allowed” to speak against the BRS.

They sought to know whether there was democracy in the state.

Taking a serious exception to the attack on Venkat Reddy, his bete noir — TPCC president A Revanth Reddy — came out in his defence by denouncing the attack.

“We will not remain as mute spectators if physical attacks take place on us. If our activists retaliate, no BRS worker would be able to move freely on the streets,” he said, adding that he was keeping a record of the atrocities of the BRS activists and that once the Congress came to power, it would be repaid in kind — and with interest.

TPCC senior vice-president Mallu Ravi lashed out at the BRS for its strong-arm methods to apparently gag the voice of the Opposition.

He said that everyone should condemn the use of violence in democracy. He sought stringent action against those who resorted to attacking the Bhongir MP.
