Track doubling projects for AP and Telangana

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major track-doubling projects in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The track doubling will happen in the Mudkhed-Medchal-Mahbubnagar-Dhone sections, and the Guntur–Bibinagar section — under the jurisdiction of South Central Railway (SCR).

The projects will aid the introduction of new trains and additional freight transportation to the benefit of both the Telugu states.

The projects will power the socio-economic development of the regions by facilitating smooth mobility for the goods and people, South Central Railway General Manager Railway Arun Kumar Jain said in an official press release on Wednesday, 16 August.

Mudkhed-Dhone doubling project

The Mudkhed-Dhone doubling project (417.88 km) will increase the existing line capacity of the section and
smoothen train operations and improve punctuality as well as wagon turnaround time.

It will help reduce congestion and increase rail traffic, providing infrastructural development in one of the busiest sections of Indian Railways. The estimated cost of this project is ₹4,686.09 crore.

The Mudkhed-Dhone doubling will ease traffic congestion on the Balharshah-Kazipet-Secunderabad and Kazipet-Vijayawada routes as goods traffic can be routed via the new double line.

It will be an alternative coal and steel route for Balharshah-Ramagundam-Secunderabad-Wadi-Guntakal and will decongest the existing busy route and enhance the traffic between southern and northern regions of India.

The main industrial clusters and corridors that are being served by this section include Ramagundam, Mancherial and Mandamari (coal), the Economic Corridors of Raichur-Devarkadra (EC-10), Kurnool-Pileru (EC-17), Kodangal-Mahabubnagar (EC-37), Abdullahpurpet-Chityala (EC-6), Sangareddi-Hyderabad (EC-23), and Muthangi-Manchirevula (EC-6).

The section also serves thermal power plants of MAHAGENCO at Parli, KPCC at Raichur and Yermaras in
Karnataka, APGENCO at Muddanur in Andhra Pradesh, food grains movement in Mudkhed, Bodhan, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Jadcherla, and Mahbubnagar and Kurnool towns.

The industrial clusters it will serve include Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Nanded, Medak, Kurnool, Gadwal,
Itikiyala, Gundlapochampally, Bahadurpally, as well as warehouses and cold storages in Nizamabad, Bodhan, Sarangapur, Bandamallaram, Mahbubnagar, and Gadwal.

The project passes through the Nanded district of Maharashtra, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Medak, Medchal, Malkajgiri, Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts of Telangana, and Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.

Guntur-Bibinagar doubling project

The second project, the Guntur-Bibinagar doubling (239 km), is expected to increase the existing line capacity of the section, easing train operations and improving punctuality as well as wagon turnaround time.

It will help reduce congestion and increase of rail traffic. The project will also generate direct employment for about 75 lakh man days during construction. The estimated cost of the project is ₹2,853.23 crore.

The Guntur-Bibinagar section connects the southern and eastern parts of India (Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa) to the central and western parts of India (Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra).

It is the shortest route from Secunderabad to Guntur/Vijayawada and doubling the section vastly improves mobility.

Guntur-Bibinagar is an alternative route between Secunderabad and Vijayawada, avoiding the highly-congested and stressed route via Kazipet, Warangal, and Khammam.

The project passes through Guntur and Palnadu districts of Andhra Pradesh, and Nalgonda and Yadadadri-Bhuvanagiri districts of Telangana.

The important cities and towns in the project area are Hyderabad (30 km from Bibinagar), Nalgonda, Nakrekal, Narkatpalli, Bhuvanagiri, Chityal, Miryalguda, Huzurnagar, Dachepalli, Piduguralla, Satennapalli, Guntur, and Vijayawada, which is 30 km from Guntur.
