Hyderabad police rescued four Indian Rollers, known locally as Palapittas, from cages at temples during Dasara on 20 October, after members of the public tipped them off. The birds were being kept captive for the festival, when many in Telangana seek a glimpse of the species, considered an auspicious sign of good luck and prosperity.
City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said the police recovered all four birds alive in raids and handed them over to Forest Department officials. Two were rescued from a temple near Bapu Ghat, where they had been confined in narrow iron cages, and handed over to officials at KBR Park. The other two were recovered from the Sri Chitragupta Swamy Temple in Chatrinaka and a temple in Balaji Nagar, Mangalhat.
The rescues came despite advance warnings from the Forest Department and the police against catching, caging or selling the birds for Dasara. The demand for Palapittas during the festival has long driven their trapping and illegal confinement.
Sajjanar said the birds had been made to suffer, with some allegedly kept without food or water. He said clear warnings had been issued before the festival that capturing or harming wildlife would invite strict legal action, but some people had ignored them.
On 9 October, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Vinay Kumar directed officials to prevent Indian Rollers from being caged for display at Durga pandals. He also asked the Endowments Department to ensure that temples complied with the instructions.
Ahead of Dasara, Mr Sajjanar had urged the public not to capture, confine or sell the birds, citing the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. He also pointed out that Indian Rollers benefit farmers by feeding on insects and pests.
Forest officials said captivity stresses the birds, causing them to stop eating and starve to death.
People who spot caged or ill-treated wild animals or birds can alert the authorities through the toll-free numbers 18004255364 and 9803338666, or the emergency number 112.
