Madhu made the remarks during an altercation with the police for disrupting a protest by BRS leaders outside the Assembly.
A row broke out in the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday, September 7, after Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Tata Madhu made objectionable remarks against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, who belongs to a Dalit Community.
Madhu made the remarks during an altercation with the police for disrupting a protest by BRS leaders outside the Assembly.
Madhu reportedly said that BRS chief and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao stayed away from House sessions because he did not wish to address the Speaker as “sir.” He also addressed the Speaker in a disrespectful manner and made derogatory insults against his mother.
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar strongly condemned the comments and met Prasad Kumar to express solidarity. He demanded that Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy suspend Madhu and move to cancel his membership. He argued that insulting the Speaker’s chair amounted to insulting democracy itself. He also questioned KCR’s alleged silence on his party colleague’s remarks.
Inside the Assembly, an attempt to debate the issue was disrupted amid objections from BJP members. Prabhakar accused the BJP of shielding BRS by stalling the discussion and demanded that atrocity charges be registered against the members involved.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy told the House the episode was not an insult to Prasad Kumar alone, but to the office of the Speaker, the Dalit community, and the people of Telangana. He demanded that KCR apologise and that Madhu be dismissed immediately.
Minister Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka) was moved to tears while addressing the issue in the Assembly. She urged the BRS leaders to leave behind their ideology of dominance and tender an honest apology to the Speaker.
Speaker Gaddam Prasad was also visibly emotional when Minister Seethakka spoke about her relationship with his family, especially his late mother, and said that such derogatory comments against her were unacceptable.
Meanwhile, Madhu denied insulting the Speaker or Council Chairman. Speaking to the media, he admitted to making objectionable remarks but said those were directed at police personnel who mistreated BRS legislators.
