Telangana ministers and BRS leaders S Niranjan Reddy and G Jagadish Reddy demanded that the Congress clarify its stand on free power supply to farmers across the nation.

Talking to reporters in Hyderabad on Saturday, 15 July, Agriculture Minister Niranjan Reddy and Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy said the Congress scored a self goal by unnecessarily raking up the issue of providing free power to farmers in Telangana.

“It is not advisable for the Congress to say that irregularities had taken place in power purchases. The transactions related to power purchases are done online,” they said, adding that the Congress suffered “a shock” on the issue that made it make unnecessary allegations.

Demanding that Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president A Revanth Reddy withdraw his remarks, the ministers said the former should tender an apology to farmers on the issue.

They said the BRS government in Telangana extended necessary support to farmers ensuring 24-hour power supply and it had never happened in the past 70 years in the state.

Despite facing adverse monsoon conditions, the farmers were able to cultivate their lands and the 24-hour power supply enabled them to draw water.

If by chance the Congress came to power in the next Assembly elections, the state would be plunged into darkness, affecting farmers, they said.

Congress making unnecessary charges

Referring to a few Congress leaders’ allegations after visiting some electrical substations in the state that uninterrupted power was not supplied, the ministers said that the power supply might have been disrupted for over an hour or lesser duration due to technical reasons.

At a time when all sectors were getting power round-the-clock, why not farmers, get the same facility?

“The Telangana Congress leaders made their intention of supplying power for only three hours instead of 24 hours as supplied by the BRS government. Should farmers wait for the entire day to get three hours’ power supply,” they asked.

The ministers reminded that several farmers lost their lives during the Congress regime in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh when they went to switch on the electrical motors in their farmlands at night.

Launching a blistering attack on the Congress, the ministers sought to know why the Congress, in power in Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, was not giving free power to farmers. They said that Chhattisgarh decided to sell its surplus power to other states.

The round-the-clock power supply to over 30 lakh pump sets across Telangana helped farmers in reviving their dwindling fortunes. Only the farmers in Telangana were getting uninterrupted power supply, the ministers said.

Farmers in other states were demanding round-the-clock free power like their Telangana counterparts, they added.
