KTR and Revanth Reddy

The BRS, which sees a threat in the Congress with the party’s graph on the ascendency, has found a powerful political weapon in the statement of TPCC president A Revanth Reddy to paint the party as anti-farmer.

BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Tuesday, 11 July, said that Revanth Reddy had revealed Congress’s intention of denying round-the-clock power supply to the farm sector when he said that power supply for eight hours would be enough, as anything more would only lead to waste of power.

KTR’s reaction

Speaking at the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) conference, Revanth Reddy said that in Telangana, 95 percent of the farmers have landholdings, which are not more than three acres each. For irrigating one acre, power supply for one hour is enough. For those with three acres, three hours of power supply would be more than sufficient. All-in-all, there is no need for the supply to exceed eight hours, he said.

Reacting, KTR said, “The Congress is trying to ensure that there would be no free power supply round-the-clock to the farmers.” He added that in the past too the Congress had made the farmers suffer by not providing enough power to the farm sector.

“The Congress wants to see that the farm sector does not get free and round-the-clock power supply,” the minister said, while Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy joined him in chastising the Congress for its anti-farmer character.

“The farmers’ first enemy is the Congress,” Reddy said, adding that the credit for destroying the farm sector in the state went to the grand old party.

He demanded to know why the Congress was unhappy with the supply of round-the-clock power to the farmers. “The Congress leaders want power supply round-the-clock at home, but farmers should not get it 24×7. Is this fair?” he asked.

Revanth Reddy retorts

In a sharp reaction to BRS’s insinuations against the Congress, Revanth Reddy, who is away in the US, tweeted that yet again the pink party has proved that it was the B team for the BJP. He said while the Congress was organising satyagrahas in protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the BRS is trying to divert the attention of the people from it to the free power supply issue.

He said that the BRS government was, in fact, cheating the people by saying that it is supplying round-the-clock power at a time when the supply is not even for 12 hours.

He said that during the last nine years, KCR had pushed the power utilities into a debt trap of ₹60,000 crore to feather his own nest. He called upon the party workers to set fire to KCR’s effigies across the state.
