On Tuesday, 31 January, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), along with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), boycotted President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of Parliament.

This was Murmu’s maiden address to Parliament, marking the opening of the Budget session. Sixteen BRS and 10 AAP members boycotted the speech.

Later, BRS Parliamentary party leader K Keshava Rao clarified that their protest was only against the Centre and its policies, not against the President herself.

The party had already made it clear that the intention of the protest was to draw the attention of the Centre to various sectors in which it has failed miserably, including education, health, employment, and so on.

Stoking the flames

Meanwhile, Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday, 31 January, lashed out at BRS MPs for boycotting the President’s address and demanded their unconditional apology for insulting her.

Addressing the media with other party MPs from the state at Delhi’s Vijay Chowk, Bandi Sanjay stated that it was shameful on the part of the BRS to have boycotted the maiden speech of India’s first Adivasi woman president, in the Parliament.

Praising the President’s speech, he lauded her for showing direction to the entire country. The speech explained how the nation has made rapid strides in every field in the last nine years and how it is going to emerge as a superpower in the next 25 years, he said.

“If BRS MPs had any objections to any of the observations of the President, they could have pointed them out during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks,” Bandi Sanjay said.

Minority war?

Bandi Sanjay noted that, in the past, the BJP has elected persons belonging to minority groups and Scheduled Castes as the President of India and, this time, it made an Adivasi woman the President.

Whereas, he alleged, the “BRS had made every attempt to defeat Droupadi Murmu in the presidential elections, as it had no respect for her. For that matter, it has utter contempt for women belonging to the Dalit, girijan and weaker communities. It is evident from the way the BRS government has been ill-treating its woman Governor who is also from a weaker section.”

Bandi Sanjay said that those who had been giving advice to BRS would only ruin the party.

“Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao doesn’t give any opportunity to discuss people’s issues in the state Assembly. If anybody tries to raise his or her voice, they would be suspended,” he charged.

The BRS MPs will not take part in discussions in Parliament because they are afraid that their own government in Telangana would get exposed for not implementing welfare schemes of the Centre, he charged.

Unfair arrest?

Sanjay, who is an MP from Karimnagar, also found fault with the police of Karimnagar district for assaulting and arresting Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists in the district on the occasion of the chief minister’s and IT Minister KT Rama Rao’s visit.

When BJP leaders tried to meet the minister to give him a representation on filling up of vacant government jobs, the police arrested them and kept silent while BRS leaders were assaulting them, he alleged.

“We strongly condemn this undemocratic attitude of the government. The day is not far off when the people chase BRS leaders on the roads. If the ABVP activists really revolt, the BRS cannot protect themselves even for a minute,” he warned.
