The BJP, on Tuesday, 16 April, announced Dr TN Vamsha Tilak as its candidate in the Secunderabad Cantonment Assembly by-election.

Tilak, a practising doctor, is the son of former minister TN Sada Lakshmi.

Polling for the by-election will be held on 13 May, along with the Lok Sabha polls.

BJP nominated Tilak after N Sri Ganesh, who ended as runner-up in the 30 November 2023 election, left the party. He is contesting the bypoll as the Congress candidate.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of incumbent BRS MLA Lasya Nanditha in a car crash near Hyderabad in February.

Nanditha had won the election by a majority of 17,169 votes, defeating her nearest rival and BJP nominee N Sri Ganesh.

Congress candidate Dr GV Vennela, son of balladeer Gadar, finished third.

BRS pins its hope on sympathy factor

BRS decided to field Nanditha’s sister, Nivedita, hoping to capitalise on the sympathy factor following the death of Nanditha and her father G Sayanna in 2023.

The BJP was forced to look for another candidate and finally decided on Tilak.

Ganesh is considered to be a prize catch for the Congress as he had polled 41,888 votes in November. The party hopes to win the seat with the Congress’s fortunes being in an upswing in the state.

The BJP appears to be confident that Narendra Modi’s magic would help Tilak win the seat.
