The BJP is on cloud nine after the resounding victory of A Venkata Narayan Reddy, whom it had backed in the election to the Telangana Legislative Council from the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Teachers‘ Constituency.

As the news broke in the wee hours of Friday, 17 March, there was jubilation in the BJP camp. An elated party state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar called it a red-letter day for the party as it has — for the first time — a member in the Council from the teachers’ constituency.

He said, “The election has proved that a strong anti-incumbency wave is building against the BRS government in the state.”

The victory could not have been sweeter as it has come at a time when the BJP is still reeling from the shock of losing the Munugode by-election to the Assembly in November last year.

The saffron party moved mountains, its candidate Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy spent money like water, and yet the result went in favour of the BRS.

Where BRS won unopposed

In another development related to the elections to the Legislative Council, all three BRS nominees for the Council from the MLA quota were declared elected unopposed on Thursday night. They are Deshapathi Srinivas, K Naveen Kumar, and Challa Venkatrami Reddy.

The Opposition parties did not field any candidates as BRS has 105 members in the 119-member Telangana Assembly.

For the BJP, winning the election to the council from the teachers’ constituency has come as a shot in the arm as it prepares for the main challenge of facing the BRS monolith in the Assembly elections later this year.

Winning by a mile

In the election from the teachers’ constituency, AVN Reddy polled 25,868 votes as against the minimum votes of 12,709 required for winning the election. His immediate rival in the fray was BRS-backed PRTU-TS former general secretary G Chennakeshava Reddy, who polled 6,641 votes.

Interestingly, the BRS did not officially support any candidate in the fray, although, unofficially, it lent some support to runner-up Chennakeshava Reddy — whose prospects were crippled by the fact that most PRTU-TS members went under the influence of AVN Reddy and a smaller chunk of voters was taken away by PRTU-TS rebel candidate and sitting MLC Katepally Janardhan Reddy.

Janardhan Reddy had the backing of the BRS in 2017, but this time, the pink party was not in favour of fielding him, but Janardhan was determined to contest. Janardhan Reddy’s performance was disastrous as he could get only 1,269 votes.

The BRS left the election to the council from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency to its ally AIMIM, though it could easily win the seat, given its majority in the local bodies in the jurisdiction of the constituency.
