Synopsis: The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement in Telangana arrested the sons of two senior police officers in connection with an interstate drug trafficking case.

The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) in Telangana, an anti-narcotics task force, arrested the sons of two senior police officers in connection with an interstate drug trafficking case. The arrests were made in the Kompally area of Hyderabad.

The arrested individuals were: Rahul Teja, son of Intelligence Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Venugopal; and Mohan, son of Cyberabad Armed Reserve Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sanjeev Kumar.

Rahul was arrested on Tuesday, 16 July, while Mohan was arrested on Monday along with another suspect, Harsha. So far, eight people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Sources said the task force acted on intelligence indicating their involvement in a drug racket peddling cocaine, MDMA, and ganja across multiple states.

The drug bust

Rahul was previously implicated in the 2024 Nizamabad drug case but had evaded arrest until now. Reports said the investigators established that Rahul has close links with Surya Annamaneni, a 34-year-old prime accused in an earlier drug bust.

The drugs were allegedly couriered from Delhi, concealed inside a pair of women’s slippers, and delivered to Surya. Police later seized the narcotics and the footwear.

Police obtained crucial leads after interrogating two individuals, Vikram and Khaja Mohiddin Chisty, who were caught in possession of narcotics in 2024.

The duo revealed that they were acting on Rahul Teja’s instructions, sourcing drugs from Delhi, Ludhiana (Punjab), and Himachal Pradesh for distribution in Hyderabad.

The Nizamabad police had already filed a chargesheet naming Rahul. Investigators consider him a key figure in the racket. He also runs a restaurant in Hyderabad. Narcotic substances were recovered from Mohan.
