Synopsis: Political circles in Hyderabad have linked the expulsion to a video-related controversy and concerns over indiscipline within the organisation. The development followed closely after Baig approached the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police. He alleged that unidentified persons had been contacting him with threats of releasing deepfake and morphed photographs and videos unless he paid money. Baig claimed the material was intended to damage his personal reputation and political career. Based on his complaint, police registered a case and began an investigation.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Friday night, 28 August, expelled its Member of the Legislative Council Mirza Rahmath Baig from the party with immediate effect and directed him to resign from his legislative post. MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed the action against the MLC to South First.
In an official statement issued by AIMIM Joint Secretary S.A. Hussain Anwar, the party announced that Baig has been expelled and must immediately submit his resignation to the Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council.
Baig, who was elected to the Legislative Council in 2023 from the Hyderabad Local Authorities constituency, has been asked to step down without delay. The party’s statement did not specify any reason for the disciplinary action.

Political career
Mirza Rahmath Baig, also known as Mirza Rahmat Baig, is a Hyderabad-based AIMIM functionary who hails from the Ibrahim Bagh–Golconda locality. He first came into wider political visibility when he contested the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections from Rajendranagar on an AIMIM ticket, though he was unsuccessful. In early 2023 the party nominated him for the Hyderabad Local Authorities seat in the Legislative Council. He was elected and took oath as MLC in May 2023.
During his tenure he was active on local civic issues in the Old City and surrounding areas and was viewed as one of the younger leaders in the party’s second-rung leadership.
With the expulsion order in place, Baig is now required to resign from the Telangana Legislative Council as directed by AIMIM.
