Roughly four in every five electors who received notices during Telangana’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) have been cleared for the final electoral roll, according to the latest status report issued by the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office on Friday, October 9.
Of the 92,88,187 notices generated for electors with discrepancies in their records or with no mapping to the 2002 rolls, 92,23,486 have been delivered.
Officials have held 82,11,205 hearings, and a total of 74,62,851 electors have been found eligible for final publication. Decisions on 18,12,367 electors are pending.
So far, 73,39,235 electors have been placed in the Absent, Shifted, Duplicate and Death (ASDD) category.
The CEO also issued a clarification on a Telugu daily’s report that as many as 95 lakh voters could be deleted from the rolls.
The Telugu daily Namaste Telangana reported that the state’s electorate, 3.38 crore before the SIR, could shrink to about 2.43 crore by the time the final roll is out. It put the likely deletions at 95 lakh voters, based on the data from October 7.
The estimate combined 73.39 lakh electors in the ASDD category with about 21.65 lakh notice recipients who had not yet been cleared. The report used 71.23 lakh as the number cleared, which was the CEO’s count as of October 7. That count has since risen by about 3.4 lakh.
The CEO’s office called the report’s claims incorrect, adding that the pending notices will be decided before November 5 under the Election Commission of India’s schedule.
However, the note does not say how many of the 18.12 lakh pending cases could end in deletion. While the ASDD deletions stand at 73.39 lakh, only 4.95 lakh Form 6 applications had been filed by the end of the claims and objections period on October 7. An estimated 70 lakh voters are expected to be excluded from the final rolls.
Notices, claims and objections will be disposed of by November 5, and the final roll is due on November 9.
