When TVK won with a single vote: Wafer thin margins of Tamil Nadu assembly polls 2026

Synopsis: After the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 were announced, the state saw several low-margin victories. In 15 constituencies, the winners had a lead of less than 1,000 votes. In Tiruppattur, TVK’s Seenivasa Sethupathy R won with a margin of just one vote.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) pulled off a decisive victory over the Dravidian parties — the DMK and the AIADMK — which have been ruling Tamil Nadu for around 60 years, when the Election Commission of India announced the results of the Assembly polls on Monday, 4 May.
While the TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the DMK won 59, and the AIADMK won 47.
Although the election also saw several high-margin victories, what stood out in the results were the 15 constituencies which witnessed winning margins of less than 1,000 votes.
Among the low-margin victories, TVK’s Seenivasa Sethupathy R, who contested from the Tiruppattur Assembly constituency, is the most notable one. He defeated his closest rival, Periakaruppan KR of the DMK, with a margin of just one vote.
Sethupathy secured 83,375 votes, while Periakaruppan fell short of the victory by one vote, with 83,374 votes.
Five constituencies with a less than 500-vote margin
Among other constituencies that saw low-margin victories, five had margins below 500 votes.
In Veppanahalli, Srinivasan PS of the DMK defeated Munusamy KP of the AIADMK with a lead of just 138 votes. In Kanniyakumari, Thalavai Sundaram N
of the AIADMK won over DMK’s Mahesh R with a 214 vote margin.
Polur witnessed TVK’s Abishek R defeating Saravanan P of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) with a lead of 227 votes. In Tirukkoyilur, AIADMK’s Palanisamy S had a margin of just 285. He defeated Vijay R Baranibalaaji of TVK.
Similarly, in Paramathi-Velur, Sekar S of the AIADMK defeated Moorthiy KS of DMK by 308 votes.
Further, nine constituencies saw winning margins between 500 and 1,000 votes.
