A 52-year-old retired Indian Army captain has been arrested in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly sharing confidential military information and defence-related details with an unidentified ‘woman’ through WhatsApp.
The accused, Babu, hails from Keezhvallam village near Kaniyambadi in Vellore district. He served in the Indian Army for 28 years across various divisions and retired last year as a captain in the Army’s ordnance department.
According to the preliminary information, an unidentified woman contacted Babu through WhatsApp about a year ago. She allegedly established contact with him through sexually explicit conversations before seeking information related to the Indian Army.
Babu allegedly shared the information requested by the woman and also contacted Army offices to obtain details that he did not already know.
He is suspected of having leaked military secrets and defence equipment-related information to her over the past year.
After military officials grew suspicious, Babu was questioned in person. Central intelligence agencies were also part of the interrogation. The inquiry allegedly revealed that he had been sharing military-related information with the unidentified contact for around a year.
Central intelligence officials reportedly detained Babu two days ago and handed him over to the Vellore Rural Police on the night of October 24. The police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
Investigators are examining the identity of the ‘woman’ who allegedly received the information. They are looking into who operated the WhatsApp account and whether any foreign nationals or overseas networks were involved in the alleged information leak.
