Synopsis: The incident took place around 3.30 am at the Waterfall Estate quarters. The victims, identified as Asla (55) and her three-year-old granddaughter Hemasree, were attacked after the elephant broke into their house.
A woman and her granddaughter were killed in a wild elephant attack at a plantation settlement in Valparai, on Monday, 13 October.
The incident took place around 3.30 am at the Waterfall Estate quarters. The victims, identified as Asla (55) and her three-year-old granddaughter Hemasree, were attacked after the elephant broke into their house.
While trying to escape, the animal charged, fatally trampling the child and injuring Asla, who later died at the Valparai government hospital.
Forest and police officials have intensified efforts to drive the elephant back into the forest and stepped up monitoring in the area. More details are awaited.
The area, also close to Kerala border has seen similar attacks in the past, making it prone to human-animal conflicts.
On 17 December 2024, Chandran (62), a resident of Thrissur district succumbed to his injuries following an elephant attack at an estate near Valparai on the Tamil Nadu border. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Coimbatore after he was attacked by a wild elephant on 10 November.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, in July 2025, a 64-year-old man was killed in a wild elephant attack in Mathamba, Peruvanthanam, Idukki. Purushothaman, a rubber tapper from Thampalakkad, Kanjirappally, was working alongside his son when the elephant charged. While attempting to flee, he was caught and trampled. Though locals managed to chase the elephant back into the forest, Purushothaman succumbed to his injuries at the Mundakayam hospital.
A 22-year-old man named Amar Ilahi was killed in a wild elephant attack at Mullaringadu in the Idukki district on 29 December 2024. The incident occurred when Ilahi was on the way to bring back his cattle after grazing at a teak plantation near his house.
His neighbour, 41-year-old BM Mansoor, was seriously injured but managed to escape the attack.
On 16 December 2024, Eldhose (45), was killed in a wild elephant attack at Kuttampuzha in Kothamangalam on the border area of Ernakulam and Idukki districts.
On 14 December 2024, 21-year-old C Ann Mary, who was riding a pillion on a two-wheeler, was killed when a palm tree uprooted by an elephant fell on her in Kothamangalam.
