Synopsis: The Supreme Court will hear TVK and BJP leader Uma Anandan’s petitions for a CBI probe into the Karur stampede that killed 41. TVK alleges state negligence, while Anandan’s plea challenges the Madras HC’s dismissal, set for 10 October.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into the Karur stampede in which 41 people tragically lost their lives.

The petition alleged that the tragedy occurred due to the negligence of the state administration.

Despite being aware that a large crowd would gather, it alleged, the government failed to allocate an appropriate venue and did not provide adequate security or crowd-control measures.

It further stated that the state police probe cannot be trusted and requests that the case be transferred to the CBI to ensure an impartial probe and accountability for those responsible.

The stampede occurred on 27 September during a rally in Karur addressed by party chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay.

The petition was filed through advocate Raghavachari and is expected to be taken up for hearing soon.

BJP petition seeking CBI probe

Meanwhile, a separate plea by BJP leader Uma Anandhan was filed before the Chief Justice against the Madras High Court order dismissing plea by Uma Anandan seeking a CBI probe into the Vijay rally stampede.

A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran acknowledged the appeal from Anandan and directed that the case be listed for hearing on 10 October.

On 27 September itself, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered the formation of a one-member inquiry commission headed by retired judge Aruna Jegadeesan to investigate the incident.

Additionally, the BJP formed an eight-member fact-finding team comprising its MPs, who visited Karur last week and later urged Chief Minister Stalin to take immediate action.
