Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay met his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at the latter’s residence in Vijayawada on Tuesday, October 13, to discuss the Krishna River water sharing with Chennai and the proposed Godavari–Cauvery linking project.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna and Advisor to the CM, Vishnu Reddy, accompanied Vijay. Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Nara Lokesh, also attended the meeting.
The meeting comes amid concerns over a shortfall in Krishna River water supplied to Chennai under the Telugu Ganga project. Tamil Nadu had reportedly received only 2.251 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of the 12 TMC allocated annually as of October 9.
Under the existing arrangement, Andhra Pradesh is required to supply 8 TMC between July and October months and 4 TMC between January and April to meet Chennai’s drinking-water needs.
The Tamil Nadu government has yet to confirm whether the meeting resulted in any agreement or a fresh commitment to release water.
The two chief ministers are also expected to have discussed the proposed Godavari–Cauvery river-linking project.
The discussions are expected to have focused on utilising surplus Godavari water –which the Andhra Pradesh government says could otherwise go to waste– through the proposed Godavari–Cauvery linking project.
As part of the broader interlinking plan, the Andhra Pradesh government has proposed the Godavari–Banakacherla project. Under the proposal, Godavari water would be diverted to the Krishna River and then transferred to the Bollapalli reservoir.
The two states are expected to discuss proposals to transport the water from Bollapalli to Banakacherla and subsequently to the Penna River. The broader Godavari–Cauvery link envisages carrying the water to the Cauvery River via Kandaleru. The Andhra Pradesh government aims to implement the project with the participation of neighbouring states and the cooperation of the Centre.
Upon his arrival in Vijayawada on Tuesday evening, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay visited the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam at Indrakeeladri to offer prayers to Goddess Kanaka Durga during the ongoing Dasara Sharannavaratri festivities.
Temple priests and officials welcomed Vijay with a traditional Poornakumbham and escorted him to the main temple. Dressed in traditional attire, he greeted devotees waiting in queues with folded hands before offering prayers to the deity at the sanctum sanctorum.
Following the darshan, Vedic scholars offered him blessings at the Aniveti Mandapam. Andhra Pradesh State Endowments Secretary K. Kannababu, Endowments Commissioner K. Ramachandra Mohan, and other officials presented Vijay with the Goddess’s sesha vastrams, prasadam and a portrait of the deity.
