TN CM Vijay announces major infrastructure development projects worth over Rs 56,000 crores

The development projects include a ₹33,066-crore Power Transmission Infrastructure Improvement Scheme and a ₹20,800-crore supercritical thermal power station.

Synopsis: Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay has announced major infrastructure and industrial projects, including ₹33,066 crore for power transmission, a ₹20,800-crore 1,600-MW thermal power station, and ₹1,762 crore for distribution upgrades. Semiconductor, FinTech and logistics hubs were also announced, while milk procurement prices will rise by ₹44 per litre.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday, August 31, announced a series of major infrastructure and industrial development projects in the Assembly.

The announcements include a ₹33,066-crore Tamil Nadu Power Transmission Infrastructure Improvement Scheme, a ₹20,800-crore new supercritical thermal power station in Thoothukudi with a total capacity of 1,600 MW, and ₹1,762 crore worth of power distribution infrastructure improvement works.

Under the power transmission improvement scheme, 196 new substations will be established, 15,000 km of new transmission lines will be laid, and existing transmission lines will be strengthened.

The Thoothukudi thermal power project will comprise two 800-MW units, with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW, and will be established at an estimated cost of ₹20,800 crore.

The power distribution works will include the establishment of 36 new 33/11 kV substations, installation of new distribution transformers and replacement of damaged and end-of-life cables, electricity poles, pillar boxes, circuit breakers and other equipment.

The chief minister also announced a Semiconductor and Electronics Manufacturing Park at Madhuramangalam in Kanchipuram district. The park will be established by a private company at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore and will include world-class research and development facilities. The project is expected to attract around ₹2,000 crore in investments and create direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 people.

A Coimbatore FinTech Hub will be established through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore. The hub will accommodate global organisations, startups, modern research laboratories, and training and skill-development facilities. It is intended to attract global investments, promote modern technologies and create high-quality employment opportunities.

A Multi-Modal Logistics Hub will also be established in the Trichy–Srirangam Ring Road area in central Tamil Nadu. The project will be taken forward through TIDCO based on a feasibility study.

Separately, the CM also announced that the milk procurement price will be increased by ₹44 per litre following requests from milk producers, who cited the increase in the cost of various inputs required for dairy farming.
