Tiruchi: Two contract workers die of suffocation while cleaning drainage system

Synopsis: Police said Prabhu first entered the manhole to clear the choke but collapsed inside. Ravi followed in an attempt to rescue him, but both suffocated to death.

On Monday, 22 September, two contract workers died of suffocation while attempting to clear a blockage in an underground drainage system at Carmel Garden near Thiruverumbur in Tiruchi district.

The deceased were identified as Prabhu (32) of Chinna Salem and Ravi (38) of Thiruvappur in Pudukkottai.

Police said Prabhu first entered the manhole to clear the choke but collapsed inside. Ravi followed in an attempt to rescue him, but both suffocated to death.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel recovered the bodies and sent them to Thuvakudi Government Hospital for post-mortem.

Thiruverumbur police have registered a case and are investigating. The incident triggered tension and shock in the locality.
