In the 2005 murder case of former AIADMK MLA K Sudharsanam, the Chennai Additional Sessions Court on Friday, 21 November, convicted three accused — Jagadish, Rakesh, and Ashok.
The court said the verdict on the fourth accused, Jaildhar Singh, and quantum of sentence of the convicted trio will be delivered on 24 November.
K Sudharsanam, former MLA of Gummidipoondi and former Minister for Backward Classes Welfare was shot dead by members of the Bawariya gang in the early hours of 9 January, 2005.
A five-member armed gang broke into his residence at Thanakkulam near Periyapalayam, shot him dead, attacked his wife and son, and looted 62 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Following the murder, then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa ordered a special intensive hunt for the gang. Under the supervision of IG Jangid, five special teams were formed. The teams identified the gang within a month and arrested the prime accused on 1 February, 2005.
Subsequent operations led to the arrest of several Bawariya gang members from Haryana and Rajasthan. Two prime accused were later killed in police encounters in North India.
The investigation — later inspiring the Tamil film Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru— identified 32 individuals in connection with the case. Several were arrested, while some secured bail and absconded. Two accused died in prison, including Om Prakash Bawariya.
The trial of the remaining four — Jagadish, Rakesh, Ashok, and Jaildhar Singh — was conducted at the Chennai District Collectorate complex by Additional Sessions Judge Abraham Lincoln. A total of 86 police witnesses were examined during the trial.
On Friday, the judge held Jagadish, Rakesh, and Ashok guilty, while reserving the verdict for Jaildhar Singh. All three convicted men told the court they had “done no wrong.”
