Tensions erupt between CPI(M) and Hindu Munnani in Dindigul; clashes leave several injured

Synopsis: A CPI(M) campaign in Thadikombu, Dindigul, turned violent on 20 June after clashes with BJP and Hindu Munnani members. CPI(M) leader Sarathkumar’s remarks targeting the Union government and a Hindu Munnani functionary reportedly triggered the confrontation. Several people were injured in the ensuing scuffle, prompting police intervention and arrests from both sides

A political campaign in Thadikombu, near Dindigul, turned violent on Friday, 20 June, after a confrontation between members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and right-wing Hindu groups, including the Hindu Munnani and BJP, led to multiple injuries and arrests.

The clash occurred during a CPI(M) campaign event criticising both the central and state governments.

CPI(M) union secretary Sarathkumar reportedly made remarks targeting the BJP-led Union government and referred to a Hindu Munnani functionary by name while commenting on the Murugan devotees’ conference.

His comments triggered strong objections from Hindu Munnani members present, escalating into a verbal spat and subsequently a physical altercation.

Local police rushed to the scene to defuse the situation and separate the groups. During the scuffle, both Sarathkumar and Hindu Munnani district functionary Vinoth sustained injuries and were transported to the Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital.

Both factions clash

The incident didn’t end there. Supporters from both factions gathered at the hospital later in the day, reigniting tensions.

BJP and Hindu Munnani members reportedly raised slogans outside the facility, prompting CPI(M) cadres to retaliate. Police intervened once more, removing BJP protesters from the area.

However, attempts to disperse CPI(M) members led to a road blockade by the left party cadres, who raised slogans and clashed again with rival supporters.

During this renewed confrontation, BJP Dindigul East district vice-president Balamoorthy sustained a serious head injury and was rushed to the hospital.

Police have since arrested multiple individuals from both sides in connection with the violence. Those taken into custody include CPI(M) members and two individuals associated with the BJP and Hindu Munnani who were reportedly involved in the altercation.

An investigation is underway, and security has been tightened in the area to prevent further flare-ups.
