Comparing India with South Korea, he said, "We have 140 crore population, where as South Korea has about 4-5 crores, yet they got 32 gold medals."

Synopsis: Revanth Reddy said, “Tamil Nadu and Telangana has taken the responsibility to bring gold medals in 2028 Olympics. Modi and Amit Shah will not do that job, we will take up that job. This is our commitment to our country.”
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy speaking at the “Kalviyil Sirandha Tamizhnadu (Tamil Nadu Excels in Education)” event in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for India’s less number of Olympic medals.
Speaking at the event, he said, “We have started Young India Sports University, but unfortunately, we have not received single gold medal in the last Olympics.”
Comparing India with South Korea, he said, “We have 140 crore population, where as South Korea has about 4-5 crores, yet they got 32 gold medals.”
“I visited the South Korea’s sports University, which spans about 30 acres, and the students there have managed to bag 16 gold medals, one student there, who gave me the bouquet, had won three gold medals in archery,” he added, claiming “After 78 years of democracy we couldn’t get single gold medal in Olympics.”
It is to be noted that, India has won 10 gold medals in total, with eight secured by Men’s hockey team, and one each secured by Abhinav Bindra in Shooting (2008) and Neeraj Chopra in Javelin Throw (2020)
Criticising the Prime Minister, Revanth Reddy said, “What is the use of 56 inch?. That’s why we started a young India Sports University headed by Sanjay Goenka, with Abhinav Bindra and Kapil Dev in the board, to train youngsters.”
“I wanted to exchange our culture, improve our friendship. If Tamil Nadu government will recommend some students for the University, I will accomodate the Tamil students in my Sports University and my sports academy,” he added, addressing Chief Minister MK Stalin.
He further added that the university is under Public Private Partnership model. “Tamil Nadu and Telangana has taken the responsibility to bring gold medals in 2028 Olympics. Modi and Amit Shah will not do that job, we will take up that job. This is our commitment to our country.”
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, took to X, to counter Revanth Reddy.
Calling out Reddy’s comments, Rijiju said, “Revanth Reddy Garu, while talking about Olympics in the presence of CM of Tamil Nadu, you spoke about Hon’ble PM in very bad taste. Imagine, you were speaking in front of those athletes who love Modi ji due to his care & support for the athletes. Politics need not be played in front of the sportspersons.”
Further criticising the DMK and Congress governments in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, Rijiju added, “Just to remind you with below statistics; Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu used to dominate Indian sports in National Games in the past. Can you explain how Congress & DMK ruined those massive sporting talents of Telangana (Earlier Andhra Pradesh) & Tamil Nadu after 2004?”
He compared the states’ performances in National Games from 2002 to 2025, wherein, the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh stood first in 2002, while in 2025, Andhra stood at 17th position, and Telangana at 25th.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu stood at 6th position in 2025.

Union MoS Bandi Sanjay also countered Revanth’s claims, and wrote: “For 16 Olympics before 2014, India won only 18 medals mostly in hockey. In just 3 Olympics under Modi ji’s regime (2016–2024), India has won 15 medals across athletics, wrestling, boxing, badminton, shooting, weightlifting and hockey. If this is “failure,” what should we call Congress’s 60 years of missed chances?”
5X Olympic Success under Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s Govt 🥇🇮🇳
CM Revanth Reddy should measure medals, not just Chest.
