Synopsis: Erode police on Sunday rescued a seven-month-old baby trafficked from Bengaluru and arrested two women in Bhavani Town. The child was found at a house on Palanipuram Fourth Street, following a search with Child Welfare Committee officials. Selvi, 37, and Janaki, 47, allegedly obtained the infant for ₹2.7 lakh and were intending to hand it over to a to a childless couple in exchange for money. 

A seven-month-old baby allegedly trafficked from Bengaluru was rescued by the Bhavani Town police in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district on Sunday, 31 August. Two women have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to the police, they received information that a baby was being kept at a house on Palanipuram Fourth Street in Bhavani. Acting on this tip-off, the police, along with officials from the Erode District Child Welfare Committee, carried out a search of the premises.

During the operation, the officers found Selvi (37) and Janaki (47) with the infant. Both women, police said, had been estranged from their families and were living together.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that the pair had obtained the baby for ₹2.7 lakh and had kept the child in their custody for over a month. Investigators said the women planned to hand over the infant to a childless couple in exchange for money.

The baby has now been placed in a government-recognised children’s home in Erode. Selvi and Janaki were produced before the court and remanded in custody.

Police have launched further investigations to trace others linked to the case.
