Synopsis: Two days after Edappadi Palaniswami’s reported alliance talks with Union Minister Amit Shah, the AIADMK criticised the ruling DMK for introducing the resolution “in a hurry to set a narrative based on religion and language”.

Tamil Nadu on Thursday, 27 March, passed a resolution against the Union government’s proposed amendments to the Waqf Act.

Urging the Centre to withdraw the Waqf (Amendment) Bull, 2024, Chief Minister MK Stalin said it would badly affect the minority Muslim community.

Stalin told the state Assembly that the proposed amendments would hinder the powers of the Waqf Board. He accused the Union government of not being bothered about hurting the sentiments of Muslims.

“The Assembly unanimously insists that the Union government should recall the Waqf Amendment Bill…which will badly affect the minority Muslims,” Stalin said.

‘DMK in a hurry’

Notably, the AIADMK criticised the resolution, terming it a narrative based on religion.

AIADMK national spokesperson Kovai Sathyan said the DMK seemed to be in a hurry to set a narrative based on religion and language. He added that the DMK was playing vote-bank politics and trying to instigate people.

AIADMK’s opposition to the resolution came two days after its general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Tuesday, 25 March.

Though Palaniswamy denied discussing reviving his party’s ties with the BJP, sources indicated that the two leaders talked about striking an alliance before the 2026 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.

Sources said the NDA would go the elections with Palaniswamy as its chief ministerial candidates. The BJP has reportedly accepted the AIADMK leader’s conditions, including on the saffron party’s state chief K Annamalai, during the Delhi talks.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is yet to be introduced in the Lok Sabha, despite being opposed by most opposition parties. Recommendations made by a parliamentary panel have been incorporated into the Bill, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament’s next session.
