Synopsis: Reports have emerged that Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar invited Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government in the state. Sources also indicated that the Governor has insisted that the party prove its majority on the Assembly floor within a few days of forming the government.
While reports initially suggested that the Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar invited Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay to form the government in the state on Thursday, 7 May, fresh information indicates that the Governor has refused to invite him to take the oath due to the lack of a clear majority. With this, the political situation in Tamil Nadu continues to remain uncertain and tense.
Meanwhile, some reports noted that AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami may meet the Governor later this afternoon.
Earlier, sources had indicated that the Governor insisted that the party prove its majority on the Assembly floor within a few days of forming the government. An official announcement is expected to be released soon.
Following the Assembly elections, the TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, but is 11 short of the absolute majority, since party chief Vijay has won two seats. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, 118 seats are required to form the government. With Congress’s support, the tally now stands at 113, and the TVK still needs the backing of at least six more MLAs.
Vijay had already staked a claim to form the government and met with the Governor on Wednesday. He has reportedly sought two weeks to prove his majority while actively courting parties such as the VCK for support.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK leadership rejected reports of any post-poll alliance with Vijay’s TVK. “This is entirely false. Under no circumstances will the AIADMK support the TVK,” AIADMK deputy general secretary said in a statement.
Earlier, sources had indicated that dissenting voices within the AIADMK have reportedly argued that the party should support TVK.
However, in a strongly worded statement, the AIADMK criticised sections of the national media for allegedly spreading “baseless rumours” and “fabricated narratives” regarding the party’s internal political developments.
The party said that all its MLAs had met and held a consultative meeting with AIADMK General Secretary and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday, asserting that this reflected the “actual ground reality”.
Questioning the intent behind speculative reports, the party asked why certain media organisations were “eager to serve particular agendas” by publishing unverified information.
The AIADMK further stated that media outlets could directly approach the party for clarification if they were genuinely interested in factual reporting. It accused some national media organisations of indulging in “speculative fiction” in the guise of journalism, calling such conduct “wholly unacceptable”.
Amid TVK seeking support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (TVK) and the Communist parties to form the government, VCK General Secretary Thol Thirumavalavan and Communist party leaders Mu Veerapandian and P Shanmugam held a meeting with DMK president MK Stalin.
It is expected that they may either arrive at an understanding with the DMK and extend support to Vijay, or announce that they will continue their alliance with the DMK on ideological grounds.
