Hung verdict, reluctant governor, anxious parties: DMK sits back as Vijay struggles to muster numbers
AIADMK MLA-elects have been moved to resort in Puducherry. While some reports suggested the MLAs have been moved without Edappadi Palaniswamy’s consent in a bid to back TVK, others insist it is a party decision to keep MLAs from splitting.

Vijay has already staked claim to form the government and met with the Governor on Wednesday.
Synopsis: With the TVK struggling to ensure the absolute majority in Tamil Nadu to form the government, the party and the AIADMK have reportedly moved their MLA-elects to secure locations to ensure that there would be no factional splits. Reports, however, claim that a section of AIADMK MLA-elects are keen on backing TVK despite the party’s contrary stand.
With the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) struggling to ensure absolute majority in Tamil Nadu to form the government, the actor-politician Vijay-led party and the AIADMK have reportedly moved their MLA-elects to secure locations to ensure that there would be no factional splits in the respective parties.
With a section of its MLA-elects demanding the leadership to support TVK to form the government, AIADMK has moved them to a resort in Puducherry for the next two days, to prevent anyone from extending support to the party. Earlier, the Congress had announced that it would support TVK to form the government. Reports emerging from Tamil Nadu, however, claim that MLA-elects from AIADMK have been moved without Edappadi Palaniswami’s consent with an intent to extend support to TVK.
The TVK is the single largest party with 108 seats, but is 11 short of the absolute majority, since party chief Vijay has won two seats. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, 118 seats are required to form the government. With Congress’s support, the tally now stands at 113.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK leadership rejected reports of any post-poll alliance with Vijay’s TVK. “This is entirely false. Under no circumstances will the AIADMK support the TVK,” AIADMK deputy general secretary said in a statement.
According to sources, dissenting voices within the AIADMK have reportedly argued that the party should support TVK. Reports further claim that TVK functionaries met AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at his residence.
DMK rubbishes claims of aligning with AIADMK
Since Wednesday evening, rumours of DMK and AIADMK joining hands to form the government in Tamil Nadu had taken the political theatre by storm. South First had reported on Wednesday evening that there was no truth to the claims being made on social media and news channels.
In what followed after, DMK chief MK Stalin on Wednesday told the Times of India that he will “not disturb” if TVK chief Vijay forms a government, and “watch without disturbing for six months”
Indicating that DMK didn’t want a constitutional crisis or another election soon, Stalin said he expected the new government to continue schemes introduced by his government, besides fulfilling the election promises of TVK.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan, although he said Vijay should form the governemnt as the people chose him, added that he would soon decide on whether to support TVK.
At the same time, more than 60 MLA-elects of the TVK are currently being housed at a private resort in Mamallapuram. The arrangement is expected to continue until the government formation process is completed. Some senior functionaries of the TVK were initially stationed at their residences, but they also started coming to the resort.
Reports have also emerged that the convoy security provided to TVK president Vijay has been withdrawn. Confusion arose after he returned home from the party’s Panaiyur office without any security vehicles accompanying him. However, no official confirmation has been issued so far. Sources from TVK claimed that Vijay has requested that the convoy be given to him only after his oath taking ceremony is completed.
