Synopsis: According to the order, the HR&CE Department had earlier announced plans through Assembly statements to construct marriage halls and commercial complexes in temples managed by the department using temple surplus funds.
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Tamil Nadu government removed previously announced plans to construct marriage halls and commercial complexes in temples under its control from legislative announcements, following directions issued by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.
In a government order issued by the Commercial Taxes, Registration and Religious Endowments Department, the Tamil Nadu government said the decision was taken based on recommendations made by the HR&CE Commissioner in a letter dated 15 June 2026.
According to the order, the HR&CE Department had earlier announced plans through Assembly statements to construct marriage halls and commercial complexes in temples managed by the department using temple surplus funds.
However, multiple petitions filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in 2025 led to interim orders on 19 and 28 August 2025, restraining authorities from using temple surplus funds for the construction of marriage halls and commercial complexes.
Since work on these proposed projects had not yet begun, proposals were subsequently received from temple administrations seeking the removal of these projects from the Assembly announcements.
After reviewing the High Court’s directions, resolutions passed by temple trustee boards, and recommendations forwarded by Joint Commissioners, the state government has now accepted the proposal and formally withdrawn these projects.
