Akash Delison, a 26-year-old resident of Krishnarajapuram in Manamadurai, was arrested by police on 6 March in connection with an alleged machete attack on two people the previous day.
Police had claimed that Akash suffered a fractured leg while attempting to escape from custody. He was later admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment, where he died on 8 March.
His family alleged custodial torture and questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Delison’s parents claimed that the police took him to a forest area during interrogation and brutally assaulted him.
Before his death, on 7 March, Delison gave a statement to the Judicial Magistrate Court in Manamadurai, when the latter visited him in the orthopaedic ward at the Sivagangai Government Medical College Hospital.
The remand report was recorded by Judicial Magistrate M Afzal Fathima in connection with Crime No. 93/2026 of Manamadurai Police Station.
In his statement, Delison alleged that he had been assaulted by police personnel.
Following complaints from Akash’s relatives and growing public attention the incident generated, a formal case was registered and the investigation was transferred to CB-CID.
Over the past several months, investigators examined the scene of occurrence, postmortem findings, witness testimonies, CCTV footage and forensic evidence as part of the probe.
Earlier, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court had on 15 June directed Akash’s family to receive his body.
However, as his parents and relatives refused to take custody of the body, police cremated the body at the electric crematorium in Thathaneri, Madurai, in the presence of his parents, on Wednesday, 17 June.
