Tamil Nadu chief minister approves waiver of crop loans of up to Rs 75,000

According to the government, the scheme will benefit around 14.43 lakh farmers across Tamil Nadu with a total estimated relief of ₹5,932.23 crore.

Synopsis: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced an expanded crop loan waiver scheme for farmers who obtained loans through cooperative banks between 1 May 2025 and 28 February 2026. The CMO said that the full loan amount will be waived for loans up to ₹75,000 and ₹35,000 for those above ₹75,000.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, 16 June, announced an expanded crop loan waiver scheme for farmers who obtained loans through cooperative banks between 1 May 2025 and 28 February 2026.

Earlier on 25 May, the government had announced a full waiver of loans up to ₹50,000 for small and marginal farmers. In a press release, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the scheme was reviewed in a meeting held on 15 June at the Secretariat after requests from various sections of society.

According to the press release, the government has now increased the waiver limit to ₹75,000 after considering RBI guidelines and the state’s financial position, with a 100 percent loan waiver for eligible farmers.

The loan waiver

The CMO said that the full loan amount will be waived for loans up to ₹75,000 and ₹35,000 for those above ₹75,000.

According to the government, the scheme will benefit around 14.43 lakh farmers across Tamil Nadu with a total estimated relief of ₹5,932.23 crore.

Under the scheme, 8.33 lakh marginal farmers will receive ₹3,599.67 crore, 5.16 lakh small farmers will receive ₹1,995.42 crore, and 93,548 other large farmers will receive ₹337.15 crore.

“This crop loan waiver will immensely benefit farmers who wish to obtain loans for the upcoming cultivation season,” the CMO said.
