Synopsis: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has called on the State government to introduce a system to monitor migrant workers entering Tamil Nadu, alleging that several recent crimes involved people from northern States. He urged the government to require employers and contractors to submit details of migrant workers, including their native place, workplace and accommodation.
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Monday, 15 June, alleged that an increasing number of crimes reported across Tamil Nadu involved people from northern States and urged the State government to establish a mechanism to monitor migrant workers entering the State.
His remarks came in the wake of a series of recent incidents involving migrant workers, including the death of a three-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted in Gummidipoondi. A migrant worker from Bihar was arrested in connection with the case. In another incident in Adhanur, a man was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 10-year-old girl.
Annamalai maintained that, over the past few months, several crimes reported across Tamil Nadu had involved people from northern States, and he cited multiple cases of chain-snatching, sexual harassment, assault and rape in Chennai and neighbouring areas.
He questioned what preventive measures the Tamil Nadu government was taking to stop such crimes before they occurred.
The former IPS officer said migration in search of employment was a natural phenomenon and noted that people from Tamil Nadu also travelled to other States for work. However, he urged the State government to put in place a proper system to monitor migrant workers entering Tamil Nadu.
He called for employers and contractors hiring migrant workers to be mandated to submit complete details of the workers, including their native place, workplace and accommodation particulars.
