Synopsis: Besides Tamil Nadu, several parts of South India are likely to receive rainfall on Sunday. Weather disruptions are likely in Puducherry (including Yanam and Mahe), Andhra Pradesh, Interior Karnataka and Kerala. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rains for four days.
Cyclone Ditwah has left Sri Lanka, leaving more than 150 people dead and a trail of destruction, and is moving north-northwest towards the Indian coast.
The storm is expected to make landfall near North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, 30 November, morning, with gale wind speeds reaching 70-80 to 90 kmph, before slowing down to 45-55 to 65 kmph on Monday, 1 December. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy thundershowers from Saturday, 29 November, to Monday.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued red and orange alerts for several districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, even as heavy rains lashed parts of the coastal region.
A red alert for extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm has been issued for Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu and Puducherry–Karaikal for Saturday.
An orange alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm, has been issued for Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Ranipet.
The RMC has also issued a red alert for Tiruvallur and Ranipet for Sunday. Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai and Villuppuram will be under orange alert when the cyclone makes landfall.
All fishing operations have been suspended. The warning covers the delta districts, neighbouring coastal areas and the Puducherry–Karaikal region, where rough sea conditions are likely through Saturday.
A cyclone warning has been issued to ports in Chennai, Cuddalore, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, Pambam and Thootukudi.

According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), isolated places in Tirupati and Chittoor districts might receive heavy rainfall on Saturday.
The IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall, or extremely heavy rainfall, at isolated locations over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema on Sunday.
According to reports, the Chennai International Airport has suspended at least 54 flights.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has set up an Emergency Help Desk at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport to help stranded Indian nationals.
“Any distressed Indian citizen at airports or any part of, in need of assistance, may reach out to the emergency No +94 773727832. (For WhatsApp also),” the High Commission posted on X.
Ditwah, named by Yemen, refers to the Detwah Lagoon on Socotra Island. Cyclone Ditwah is the 14th tropical depression and fourth cyclonic storm to form during the 2025 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.
