A Supreme Court-appointed supervisory committee overseeing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Karur stampede will visit the district on 02 December. The panel is headed by former Supreme Court justice Ajay Rastogi.

The CBI is investigating the incident in which 41 people lost their lives during a crowd surge at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign meeting addressed by party president Vijay at Velusamipuram on 27 September.

Karur District Collector Thiru M Thangavel IAS said the survivors of the incident, victims’ family members, and members of the public or organisations who wish to submit petitions related to the case may do so directly before the supervisory committee.

Petitions will be received on 2 December from 10.30 am onwards at the Government Bungalow located near the District Collectorate office in Karur.

The CBI inquiry

The Supreme Court had transferred the case to the CBI on 13 October and constituted a special three-member panel to supervise the investigation. Justice Rastogi was authorised to select the remaining two members from Tamil Nadu-cadre IPS officers drawn from outside the State.

The direction came in response to a group of petitions by TVK, Advocate GS Mani, Panneerselvam Pitchaimuthu, Selvaraj P, and Advocate S Prabhakaran. Panneerselvam had lost his son, Krithik, in the stampede.

Earlier, both the Madurai Bench and the Principal Bench of the Madras High Court had conducted inquiries and issued various directions on the Karur stampede deaths.

Following the Supreme Court directive, the CBI took over the case. On 31 October, a 15-member CBI team led by ASP Mahesh Kumar, SP Praveen Kumar, DSP Ramakrishnan and Inspector Manoharan carried out a field inspection at Velusamipuram, the site of the tragedy.

The team used advanced 3D digital survey technology to assess road width, crowd capacity, bus stands and nearby streets.
